Sperm Selection
Choosing the donor

It is a very unsure procedure for most couples to decide on the donor for their child.

When arriving at a sperm bank it can be scary and confusing.  A lot of couples feel that it is an invasion of their privacy and something that should be more private between them alone.

Sperm

Suggestion
Contact the sperm bank before the time and ask them to fax or e-mail you a list of the donors available.  You can discuss the donor privately in your home environment.

If not happy with the donors available, request the clinic if any possible donors are still in quarantine.  (These are new donors still under the window period and is busy undergoing tests etc).

Ask when they will be available.  If you are still not satisfied with the donors available, rather contact another clinic/sperm bank to ensure you are confortable with your choice.

The available donor list will supply you with the following info:
-          An identification number
(This is a number they use at the clinic/sperm bank for their record purposes)
-          Height
-          Weight
-          Colour eyes
-          Colour Hair
-          Hobbies
-          Occupation e.g. student, etc
-          Blood type
-          Race

NOTE:  If you have any questions, ask the staff.  They are normally very friendly and understand the confusions.

What is next?

After selecting the donor, stay in contact with the sperm bank to make sure the donor stock is available.  You will have the choice to purchase the entire batch of the donor or only the amount required for your procedure.

Should you decide to purchase more stock for future use, the clinic/sperm bank will charge you a monthly/annual fee to "store" the rest of the donor sperm that you will not use immediately.
  • Contact the sperm bank to confirm that they have in “stock”  before you start testing your cycle and prepare them on the day you might come in.  (This you will know by checking your ovulation cycle)
  • You will arrive with your container. (They should ask you to bring a flask).  If you are making use of a gynecologist they will fill the flask with nitrogen that will keep the sperm frozen until you reach the gynecologist that will remove the sperm and “prepare it” under the right conditions for the procedure.  After the insemination, you would be required to stay at the clinic/dr's room for about 15-20 minutes.
Pregnancy testing will take place about 10-12 days thereafter.
