IUI (Intrauterine Insemination.)
IUI procedure is the most common ART procedure. This is a procedure where the sperm will be assisted to reach the egg easier. It is a popular procedure with couples as it is also one of the most cost effective ways.
Procedure in simple terms:
A method where washed sperm (donor) gets directly placed into the uterus via a catheter to enhance the chances of fertilization.
A stimulated cycle (with the assistance of fertility drugs) or the natural cycle of the woman will be used to implant the donor sperm during your ovulation period.
STEPS:
Determination of the best day of insemination. This will be during the ovulation period.
This gets done through either:
Stimulated cycle (With the assistance of fertility drugs)
Using the natural cycle of woman
Washed donor sperm will be collected on the most suitable day for insemination
Donor sperm need to be prepared for insemination. Important that it reaches the right temperature for insemination. Sperm cells are very sensitive and die easily.
Donor sperm will be placed with a long thin catheter inside the cervix and injected into the uterus.
After the procedure most doctors will ask you to lie down for a period. (15-20 min)
A pregnancy test can be done about 12-14 days after the procedure. A blood test is recommended for accuracy.
SUCCESS RATE
Looking at about 25% change of the procedure to be successful. If you think it is a small percentage, think again. Most couples, through natural (without medical assistance), try from 6 months to 1 year before successful conception. The percentage is actually high in comparison.
