IVF
In-vitro Fertilization

Page: 1/2

The main reason for same-sex couples making use of this procedure is that both parties are physically more involved in the process.

IVF is also used when a male couple (same-sex) use a surrogate "mother" to carry a child for them.

Most common way:  Fertile eggs will be retrieved from one party and be inseminated by donor selected washed sperm.  After fertilization is confirmed of the egg or eggs it will be implanted in the partner to carry the baby for the duration of the pregnancy.

This procedure’s costs varies from clinic to clinic but due to the extensive medical involvement it is normally an expensive option and the couple need to have a nice little financial nest egg to play with as there is no guarantee that it will be successful the first time.

The cost for the procedure normally covers the entire process, which includes:

  • Injectables to prepare eggs for fertilization
  • Ultra monitoring during the Cycle
  • Aspiration (Retrieval of Eggs from partner who’s eggs will be used)
  • Laboratory Procedures
  • Embryo Transfers (Implanting for the fertilized egg)
Procedure in simple terms:

STEPS
You and your partners cycle need to coordinate.  This will be done with medical assistance.

  • A series of injections will be given to get eggs ready for fertilization
  • Retrieve Ovum (Eggs) from the partner whose eggs will be used during the procedure.  The eggs will be harvested through the vagina.  A small amount of discomfort afterwards.  You normally can go home about 2 hours after the procedure.
    1. Side effects:  A little bloated and uncomfortable but should clear up by your next cycle
  • Ovum gets fertilized with donor sperm
  • The fertilized egg will be implanted into the partner that will carry the baby for the duration
Chances of procedure being successful:
There are a couple of factors that can influence the procedure.  In general the preference age is not older than 35.  There are cases where older women were successful.  It only reduce your chances.  In general a woman after 35 produces less eggs ready to be fertilized.

Other influences can be poor health, life style and access stress.

15 –25 % chance of the procedure to be successful
